ATFL NEWS

July 2007

Dear Friends,

You all know about my heartfelt connection with Thoroughbred racehorses and broodmares. I volunteer my time to rescue them from going to slaughter. It is a victory for each and every horse that can be transitioned into a second career off the racetrack.  For the past year and a half I have been thinking of going one step further in this endeavor. Having worked with horse rescue organizations throughout the United States I find issues that are common to all of them. The major issue being funding to support the horses in their care. The lack of funding also prohibits rescue organizations from being able to accept horses into their program. Rescue organizations receive private donations and grants but it’s just not enough.  Most often these incredible people who rescue and care for the Thoroughbreds are using their own personal funds.

The best way I feel I can help these magnificent Thoroughbreds is to start a funding non-profit. A non-profit that will help support rescue organizations throughout the United States so they can help the horses in their care and be able to accept more Thoroughbreds into their program. These horses can transition into numerous careers when their racing days are done.

I’m almost ready to launch this non-profit.  It is appropriately titled, After the Finish LineTM. This is from a book written by Bill Heller. The paperwork has been filed as required by law and the web site is in progress.  Please come along for the ride and be part of this wonderful national organization to help Thoroughbred horses.

Sincerely,

Dawn Mellen, President
