A Note from Norah Pollard

My dad, Red Pollard, loved horses—especially Seabiscuit, the Thoroughbred he rode to recovery and raced to victory.  Red would be so glad to know that there are now horse rescues for the Thoroughbreds and broodmares that have given so much to us and now need us to give them love and care in return.

November 2007

Dear Friends,

Starting a non-profit is definitely challenging. I feel empowered to move forward for the good of the Thoroughbreds. 

After the Finish LineTM has added a Press Page to the website. We have already received press from coast to coast. We were on cable, radio and the internet as well as in newspapers. Our goal is to be recognized as a National funding non-profit. In the next two months you will read about us in newspaper articles as well as a magazine advertisement. Let us know that you have seen our press!

Our first request for Emergency Funds, luckily, was not necessary. After the Finish LineTM made funds available to help purchase broodmares that did not sell at a horse sale in California. It was thought that these broodmares would show up at two horse auctions. They did not. I hope they arrived back to their barns, safe and happy.

Our second request for Emergency Funds came from CANTER-Ohio. Without hesitation we approved emergency funds for this organization. Unfortunately, CANTER did not get two grants they were expecting. They have been fundraising to meet their board bill for 25 horses. They also need to make partial payments on other bills. After the Finish LineTM respects and thanks CANTER-Ohio for helping ex-racehorses.

CANTER-Ohio extends a heartfelt thanks to After the Finish LineTM for coming through for us in a pinch during a difficult year. In practical terms, their support means that we can provide feed, bedding and care for at least 2 ex-racehorses waiting to find their new careers. It's a great Christmas present for our horses!

After the Finish LineTM expects to have the grant application on the website in the beginning of December. We provide grants to 501(C)(3) organizations that care for Thoroughbred horses. The number of grants given and the amount of each grant is based on our available funds.

The November and December holidays have once again snuck up on us. It is a time for family gatherings and reflecting upon this years personal journey. After the Finish LineTM has brought great meaning to my life. Thoroughbreds deserve the opportunity to transition to a new life when their racing careers are over.
